Inspiration from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez

I tore a one-page article from Men’s Health magazine over a year ago, and it’s been floating around my desk ever since. While I’ve almost tossed it many times just to eliminate clutter, I found myself hanging on to this one page. This brief article is an interview with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, in which he gives some basic “how to live your life” kind of advice. I share a few of his philosophies (being both creatively and technically adept, seeing work and home life together not separate, having a lot of projects in the pipeline, mentally getting out of your own way), and the conviction with which he speaks of these is inspiring. I encourage you to check out the article, here’s a quick overview:

  • “Creativity only lets you dream. Match it with technical expertise and you can build.”
  • combining, not balancing, work and home life
  • always having several projects going, always lining up new ones
  • building confidence in kids
  • working better with less money
  • the only obstacles are self-induced
